IMPORTANT: This article contains information about modifying the registry. Before you modify the registry, make sure to back it up and make sure that you understand how to restore the registry if a problem occurs. For information about how to back up, restore, and edit the registry, see the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/256986/EN-US/.
Download and run the MCPR tool from: (http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe).
Run MCPR.exe and allow it to complete. When the program completes, do not close the MCPR window.
Click NO when prompted to reboot.
If The MCPR window displays Incomplete cleanup:
Click View Log and locate any keys which could not be removed by MCPR. These keys will be identified by errors in the log with the description:
(WINERR RegOpenKeyEx() failed. Error: 5) (a registry key will be listed beside the error).
Take note of all registry keys with this error. Each key with this error must be deleted.
Open the registry editor and find any keys that could not be removed by MCPR (the ones which include the error above) and delete them:
Click Start, Run, type regedit and click OK.
Locate the keys listed in the Logs.
Right-click each of the listed keys and select Delete.
If you receive a message that permission is denied when you attempt to delete a key:
Right-click key you are trying to delete
Click Permissions
Click Add button
Type Everyone in the Name field and click OK
Select Everyone from the list and select Full Control and Allow then click OK
Right-click the registry key and select Delete (you should now be able to delete the key).
Repeat this process for each key that failed to delete due to permission denial.
Restart the computer and run MCPR again to ensure it completes successfully. You should now be able to complete the installation of your McAfee products.
