Windows XP Root Certificate Update, Microsoft KB 931125, causes operational issues with McAfee Consumer 2007
Summary: This article explains how to repair the problems that Microsoft KB 931125 causes with the McAfee 2007 products.
Affected Products:
* McAfee Security Center
* McAfee VirusScan
* McAfee Personal Firewall
* McAfee Privacy Service
* McAfee SpamKiller
* McAfee SiteAdvisor
Affected Operating Systems:
* Microsoft Windows XP Home
* Microsoft Windows XP Professional
Description
After installing this optional update and rebooting the machine, the McAfee applications are no longer able to validate a specific Root Certificate. The inability to locate and validate this certificate prevents the Security suite from operating normally.
This Windows update is not present in the Windows Control Panel Add/Remove Programs so it can not be automatically removed. There are three solutions available to resolve this issue and return the system to normal.
Solution 1
Install the newest version of McAfee Security Suite, Version 9.2. This version is compatible with the new certificate.
Providing Internet access is still possible, download the new version of McAfee Security Suite.
1. In an Internet browser, type http://us.mcafee.com.
2. Click My Account, type in your Username and Password, then click login.
3. Click the Download function in the McAfee Total Protection row.
4. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click I agree.
5. Follow the steps listed on the Download Manager page.
Solution 2
Run a utility tool that renames the problem certificate
1. In an Internet browser, type http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/CertRename.exe and press ENTER.
2. Save this file to a directory.
3. Navigate to the directory and double-click CertRename.exe.
4. Restart the computer when the executable completes.
Solution 3
Manually modify the certificate to match what is expected
1. Open Microsoft Internet Explorer.
2. Click Tools, Internet Options.
3. Click the Content tab, Certificates.
4. Click the Trusted Root Certificate Authorities tab.
5. Click the dropdown window for Intended Purpose and choose Client Authentication.
6. Click the Trusted Root Certification Authorities tab.
7. Locate the Certificates Issued by Class 3 Public Primary Certification Authority.
8. Double-click the certificate dated 8/1/2028.
9. Click the Details tab.
10. Locate the Serial Number field and compare it to:
70 ba e4 1d 10 d9 29 34 b6 38 ca 7b 03 cc ba bf
11. If the Serial Numbers match this is the correct Certificate.
12. Select Friendly Name, and click Edit Properties.
13. Type VeriSign Class 3 Public Primary CA in the Friendly name: field.
14. Click OK.
15. Close all windows and restart the computer.
